Jim Harkness Equipment Ltd. is not your average farm equipment company. We sell grain storage, handling, and drying products; buildings and structures; compact tractors; ride-on lawn mowers; outdoor furnaces; poultry equipment; and a range of specialty and niche products. To complement the products we sell, our experienced team provides grain bin construction and servicing, small engine repair, outdoor furnace installation and servicing, and equipment rentals. Over 50 years of service. If we don’t have it, we’ll help you find it.

Jim Harkness Equipment Ltd. traces its roots back to 1977, when Jim Harkness began selling new and used farm equipment from the family farm in Harriston, Ontario. What started as a small, local operation steadily grew as Jim added product lines and company divisions to better serve the agricultural community.

Jim and Doreen Harkness were both raised on mixed farms near Harriston, Ontario. After Jim spent 19 years with the Royal Bank and Canada Packers, they chose to settle in Harriston and return to their agricultural roots through mixed farming, beef cattle, and cash cropping approx. 400 acres. In 1977, one of the barns was converted into an office building, officially establishing Jim Harkness Equipment Ltd. As agricultural markets shifted in the early 1980s, they made the pivotal decision to focus fully on the equipment side of the business—laying the foundation for the company as it exists today.

In September 1982, the company was incorporated as Jim Harkness Equipment Ltd., with Harco Ag Equipment registered as the trade name for the wholesale division. Today, we proudly remain operating out of the original covered barn, plus additions, on Highway #9 between Harriston and Clifford, Ontario, approximately 50 miles north of Highway 401. In 2002, a storage and drop-off facility was added near Woodstock, Ontario. This location gradually grew into a second store, operating for many years under the trade name MCQUIPMENT, and now also operating as Jim Harkness Equipment Ltd.

Founder James (Jim) Wilfred Harkness remained actively involved in the business until mid-September 2024. He passed away on November 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. While deeply missed, Jim’s passion for farming, equipment, and customer service continues to guide the values and direction of Jim Harkness Equipment Ltd.

Today, Jim Harkness Equipment Ltd., simply known as Harkness Equipment Ltd., remains a family-owned and operated business, with the second generation actively leading the company. Doug Harkness, son of Jim, serves as Co-Owner and manages Harkness Equipment Ltd., while Jake Harkness, son of Jim, serves as Co-Owner and manages the wholesale operation, Harco Ag Equipment. Members of the third generation have also begun stepping into the business, making their mark. With the support of our dedicated staff, we continue to ensure the Harkness family legacy remains strong for years to come.
